A quick run through of my current knitting wips (works-in-progress) the other day saw my total at 14. This is in part due to the casting on frenzy of last week, but also I just have a short attention span. I am comfortable working on a large number of projects at once IF I can keep them segregated and organised in project bags. But things were getting a little out of hand.
I’ve been selling quite a few of my project bags and sock knitting kits of late, or I would just have commandeered some more bags from that stash. Being unable to do that, I decided to spend a morning making up some more bags for myself.
I started with a ‘fluff bucket’. These are pretty much like my large project bags, but without the fancy pockets and drawstring and handle. Just a lined, soft fabric bucket, basically. But they take so much tiiiiiime. Time that I’d rather be using doing a thousand other things. So I got one done, and then decided I needed a quicker option.
I can get one of these done in twenty minutes if I ignore perfectionism. That’s more like it.
A couple of double drawstring ones first…
Then some little box-based ones with toggles…
This one was meant to be for sale. But seriously, it’s coffee and donuts. I had to keep it. I don’t eat donuts, but I sure do like coffee.
Then a larger one. When this was done I realised it needed a handle. So the next one got a handle. I dyed this piece of fabric when I was 15. I hung onto it because I knew I’d need it someday!! (24 years later…)
All of my bags are fully lined and have internal pockets, one for needles and one for stitch markers. I also have started doing one small pocket for a cable needle which, it turns out, is really handy.
Then I got a little bit fancy with linen and appliqué and funny linings and a little clasp for stitch markers…
My project bag tally now sits at 11 in total. 3 projects are still currently in plastic boxes. Because I save all my best fabrics for the bags I sell, my own are generally a mismatch of higgeldy piggeldy offcuts that clash violently with everything, including each other. But I care not. My favourite is still this one. 🙂
Of course I’ve also been knitting. Some secret knitting on my own new patterns, plus a couple of last minute projects for my Finland trip…a reeeally warm beanie, the pattern is ‘Hat most likely to succeed‘ by Alexandra Virgiel. I liked this pattern. It’s an interesting cable I hadn’t tried before, and I think I’ll take another of these as my plane knitting project.
And…cue dramatic music…..more crochet. My mum’s friend is donating lots of cakes of her beautiful handmade soap to a ‘farmer’s wife’ outback charity, and we are making little hanging bags for them all.
So it was a busy week, but I also did another Craftsy class, My First Crochet Shawl. I didn’t enjoy this class as much as the crochet cardigan one, but at least I had enough yarn to finish this one.
I rather like it. The yarn is Lincraft ‘Splendour’ in the Red Sunset colour way, which I got at more than 50% off last weekend, so this is an AU$9 shawl. 🙂
8 days to go. I’m pretty sure I can fit more knitting in….it’s 34 degrees Celsius all week here, and difficult to getting the ‘cosy knitting’ mojo on. Maybe if I turn the air con down a bit….
B 🙂
I like the idea of project bags. Mine are in large zip lock bags; plastic is not too cool 🙂

I used to sell on Etsy but no I don’t put them on there anymore, I mainly sell them locally now and on eBay 🙂 I don’t know how to link to it though because I only use the app, I’ll try to work it out! 🙂

I just searched for knitting bags on eBay 🙂 It’s about time I learn to use dpns 🙂

I can’t sew so I just drop things on the floor. It’s not half as lovely as your bags.

LOL a fair bit of floor dropping goes on here too, regardless 🙂 thanks Bruce 🙂

Those bags are a great idea! And being a big fan of small projects and knitting in the round, I love to knit caps….that cabled one is very tempting.

Thank you Cynthia! 🙂 yes me too, I love cabled beanies especially but hardly have any need for them here…not that that stops me knitting them 🙂 it was a good pattern, only cabling every ten rows. 🙂

Your fabric stash must rival your yarn stash… Love (LURVE!!!) the bicycle print fabric.

Lol me too with that fabric! it’s kind of steampunk but not too much 🙂 yeah I know right, I swear I hardly ever buy fabric but the stash just never seems to go down…but you are correct, it was fairly immense to begin with 🙂 I used to be an upholsterer and quilter 🙂

What a beautiful shawl! I love the open weave of that. And your project bags are all so pretty–they must look like a bunch of flowers when they’re all together. But how do you know which project is in which? I know I’d be searching through all of them each time I tried to find something. ;P

Lol thank you, yes there is usually a little something poking out the top of each bag so I can see what’s in it 🙂 otherwise I just wade through the sea of them on the floor and hope for the best 🙂 yes I was really taken with that shawl pattern too, at the very end of the course she showed one in laceweight yarn which was gorgeous…that’s definitely next on the list! 🙂 and it was very easy and VERY fast.

I’ll be talking to you about a project bag sometime in the New Year I expect when my finances have settled a bit 🙂 It’s a very lovely shawl – but those bags are much needed here at Chez Contentment and Chaos!!

Great produce, Bianca. I predict you will soon need to make more bags, for the same replacement reason.

I had to pin that scrumptiousness that is your “Knit” bag with the tiny stitch holders on the tag. Gorgeousness to the max :). The lining is beautifully done as well. Looks like I need to get a sewing machine and learn to sew as well. SO much to learn next year methinks. Your project bags are eclectic and glorious Ms W. Berryknits. The shawl is lovely but I know what you mean about not being in love with it. You will be away in Finland soon and you might need a hat to wear under your cable hat. Going from hot to cold is a bit of a shock. Coming back is worse! At least you will have Christmas for R&R before we hit the new year running. I can’t believe you can keep up with all of those WIP by the way. I have cupboards full of them. My kids called my cupboard “mum’s failed crafts cupboard”. I had a jumper that I was knitting for my first husband, 7 years after we divorced! I decided to prudently remove it from the cupboard after Stevie-boy asked about it. I am all for recycling but recycling an ex’s jumper for your current love is most probably a step too far methinks ;).

Lol thank you for the lovely comments and the pin, narf!! 🙂 always much appreciated. I laughed so hard because I have to admit that I did…ahem…undo one certain man’s wip jumper and knit it for the next…but seriously, it was cashmere! I couldn’t let it go to waste! 🙂 yes the forecast for Helsinki next week includes the phrases ‘heavy sleet’ and ‘blowing snow’, that also made me laugh but in a slightly frightened way lol 😉 yes the reverse jetlag is the worst by far isn’t it..but at least then you’re home and comfortable and can mooch about like a zombie in the air con for a few days…I love the idea of your cupboard but would never call them failures, everything is a learning experience!! 🙂 I look forward to seeing your creations when you get a bit more time, I have a feeling they will be awesome :))

Great bags! I keep promising myself a bag making frenzy too. I did have a bit of a casting on frenzy last week, but nothing very big so they’re all hanging out on the settee or in various spots around the house.

Thanks Bekki! 🙂 it’s funny isn’t it, when urge suddenly hits, those bags can get churned out very quickly! And so satisfying having somewhere to put everything. I really look forward to seeing your bag frenzy! 🙂 I love casting on frenzies too, as you say, variety is the spice of life 🙂 I guess we enjoy the challenge of keeping different patterns organised in our heads, plus being able to cable or knit plain or knit fine lace etc. as the mood strikes. 🙂

Gorgeous bags. The bucket is stunning, but it does look like A LOT of work. 🙂 The other bags are super pretty, and convenient. Just perfect for lots of projects of all kinds and sizes.
That cable pattern on the hat is very interesting. Have never seen it before. 🙂
Your shawl is just right, it looks amazingly fluffy and warm. I like those colours.

Thank you! 🙂 I was thinking of you just this morning as was examining the African expressions range of yarns, beautiful colours! 🙂 got a nice free pattern from their website. Those buckets are definitely a bit of a pain, especially putting the base in and working through all the thick layers! Not my favourite job 🙂 yes that cable is unusual, with the left and right cable worked in the same row, it gets a bit tight but the final braid is super squishy and warm 🙂

🙂 I also got some free patterns from the African Expressions website. I have some that is calling for a project. 🙂
Your buckets are gorgeous, and I would say really worth it, if for yourself. Really hard work, I would imagine. I dont sew that well. 🙂 only straight lines.
I am keeping a copy of the cable hat, it is a must knit. I love to knit cables, and this one is very special.

Thank you, Bianca for sending the bag so promptly. I am already using it. It is larger and more attractive than I expected. I love all the goodies you included; a couple of things were just what I needed and wanted to buy! I had to laugh to see the dpns that you included – maybe they will be useful ONE DAY :). How sweet of you to send a Xmas gift that matches my bag – I love it!
