New Year Knitting

Don’t you just LOVE a new year? It feels like being given universal permission to explode with ideas, the ultimate freedom to start a thousand new craft projects. Or that might just be me.
I never make New Year’s resolutions though. I think there’s just something about the word ‘resolution’ that immediately starches my upper lip, breaks me out in a sweat and warns of sacrifices and trials ahead…so bugger that.
I do set goals, however. Goals are easy. Ambitions. Intentions. Hopes. Dreams. It’s all the same word, right?
So one of my goals this year, as indeed it is every single year, is to Craft All the Things.
Reading everyone’s fantastic ideas for new year knitting put my own complete lack of plans into perspective. I am casting on randomly and crazily. Knitting is my ultimate hedonistic delight, and lately I’ve really felt drawn to the joy of it again. The sheer pleasure of casting on, of burying my face hands in a basket of yarn. Feeling laceweight linen glide across the needles. Sketching up a new design that I want and I just can’t find the pattern for. Usually summer comes to Queensland and my knitting sits like a lump next to my chair while I sweat and stare at it churlishly. Not this year.
I’ve brought some of my knitting projects up to the house on this rainy day, thus the kitties.

I’m still working away on my fifth Metallicus.

And my Lilli Pilli.

Crocheting another linen shawl, this one to sell.
Decided to use some of my Helsinki yarn on a Fine Sand cardigan by Heidi Kirrmaier, the lighter weight version of Quick Sand, which is the black one I made just before Christmas.

The linen is biasing a little but so far I adore it.

I am also enjoying the Hoodie Shawl Cardigan by Sosu. This is kind of a weird hybrid, you start with knitting a triangular shawl, and then using short rows it gets gradually turned into a top down cardigan. I chose this one mainly to use up some awkward amounts of fingering weight yarn I had. I have no idea how this will turn out, it’s one of those ‘trust the pattern’ projects, but I’m really enjoying the interesting knitting and using new (to me) techniques like German short rows. I also made a set of bee stitch markers just for this project. 🙂

My sock yarn bag made it into Handmade magazine this month, and two more projects will be in the next issue. 😃

I’ve been working on some other small projects, like this one.

M and I are creatures of routine, and frequently have coffee and cake on the back deck. Finally we have a tray to take it out on, instead of making two trips. It’s just paint and a bit of William Morris wrapping paper, but it will do.
This next one is less of a recycling project and more of a being-a-tight-arse project. I love fairy lights, but wanted to do something pretty with the bulbs. I had seen the ping pong ball idea around, but decided they needed some extra decoration.

I fully intended to do this all professional-like and drill the holes in the top. But my $2 pack of balls were so poor quality, that in the end all it took was a little stab with scissors.

I tried a few different types of paint, trying to get it to stick evenly, before settling on a mix of Modge Podge and gouache. I brushed two coats of this onto the balls, which I held on the end of knitting needles (quelle surprise) and other assorted sharp thingies.

I started painting them with gold paint and a fine brush, but then…yeah… I decided life is just a bit too short and used a gold pen instead to draw some random patterns and dots. I hot glue gunned them to the lights, which are a battery operated string of ten ($1.50 on eBay).

 Seeing as there’s a theme going…

 There’s more…quite a lot more…but it can wait until next time. 🙂
B 🙂

  1. Gah! You are such a cool, creative kind of a gal – you even make your own ping-pong lights!! They are fabulous! All the knitting is great, the bag is great – well done on the mag thing too, another tick on your ‘fabulously wonderful me’ list. 🙂 I have those bee charms – why didn’t I think of making my own row markers? [Sigh] The cats are great, the Paris cushion is great…….. I’m keen to see the Hoodie Shawl finished it sounds most intriguing! Are those light catcher comets playing over your unadorned tray? Wonderful post Bianca, you are kicking the new year off to a fabulous start!!

    • Aw thank you very much Pauline, you made me feel all warm and fuzzy! 😀 yes they are indeed light catcher rainbows, Cynthia spotted them too, I just love love love my light catcher :))) ❤ the others at Christmas were extremely happily received too! 😀 the next one will be for the house! I saw the stitch markers made with charms online but they had put a jump ring between the loop and the charm for some reason…that twists the charm sideways though, so I just left that out and they work great…like you, I wondered why I hadn't thought of it lol! Now I am making a stack of them, I think my new favourites are raven skulls, which satisfies the old goth in me…:) am looking forward to seeing your beautiful creations throughout 2016! 🙂

  2. Lovely projects all, Bianca. Although I don’t think of myself as a craft person; my skills are poor and I don’t have the patience to perfect them, I LIKE the idea of what we Chinese call 手工 ‘hand work’. Just as I don’t care that I’m not that good, I don’t care that the stuff I make are imperfect so in a way, that’s perfect. 🙂 I am still knitting and crocheting. Made a belt yesterday (crochet) 🙂

    • Thank you Mary. 🙂 I often feel the jack of all trades, master of none, and I too embrace the imperfect though I think in a more scattered way to you, from what I have seen your work is SO elegant and refined, from poetry to calligraphy to crochet! I’ll probably always be a little scruffy, but I watch curiously as my tastes and skills mature, I notice I don’t have to rush through knitting projects now as I used to, though I still need a hundred projects on the go at once to satisfy that part of my brain 😀 I find there is so much meaning and joy in the process that the end result is pretty negligent anyway! I am SO glad you are still crocheting and hope it still brings you lots of joy, I love seeing your work and hope you post lots throughout 2016! 🙂 x

      • Thanks, Bianca. I only attempt easy projects and send my work to a charity for the homeless. I too have several things going on at the same time 🙂 We should be proud of being the jack of all trades 🙂

      • Lol. That is so true. I remember when we had two cats. They only loved the winter when they could be as close as possible to the heater or the fire, only to get their fur of whiskers singed. Had to watch them all the time. 🙂
Does the magazine have an online web place where we can also have a look?

      • 🙂 Hahaha ours do that too, they roast themselves in front of the fire in winter like BBQ chickens 🙂 one of them jumped on the top of the slow combustion once, but fortunately neither have done that since, just curled their whiskers!….no Handmade haven’t got a website with projects or anything as far as I’m aware, all I have seen is the Facebook page, bit of a shame really!

  4. I feel like a slacker! I have Lilli Pilli queue’d and am excited to get started. I love your DIY’s too, I don’t do nearly enough other crafting the last few years but I’m feeling inspired to get that box unpacked now 🙂

    • Lol you’re the last person that could be called a slacker Karin! 😀 yeah the Lilli Pilli is a fun project, though I found choosing colours reeeeally hard… Too many choices! I have one of your beautiful designs (matinee II) queued that I’m keen to start as soon as Lilli Pilli is done 🙂 I look forward to seeing your crafty projects this year!

  5. The light project is brilliant! And you got me all excited with your rainbow metallicus! 🙂 I’m having a rainbow yarn craze at the moment 🙂 I bought some very crap fairy lights on eBay, that keep changing mode and randomly start flickering like their having a fit everytime I turn on any other light downstairs so I will give your project a go 🙂 thanks! Man, you are a creative genius!

    • Thanks very much Noemie! I can’t take credit for the ping pong ball idea but glad you’re going to give it a go, can’t WAIT to see your version, sure it will be spectacular!! 😀 we’ve got like three power points in the whole house here so I have to go with the battery operated ones, but really I’d love the whole house wired in with fairy lights lol! Isn’t rainbow yarn just the BEST? :)) I’m excited to see what you do with yours, it’s so cheerful to watch the colours change as you knit, I am dragging out that Metallicus because I don’t want the rainbow to end….:D
