Bit busy

Life has been a little hectic of late at Ravensridge, with major work changes and M away at a couple of conferences. Where are the months going? I can’t believe that a year ago this week we were climbing the Eiffel Tower and watching the sunset over Paris. 🙂

This week we have goannas climbing gum trees instead.

 This week’s projects –
Madrona Cardigan by Rohn Strong. Not sure how this one is going to turn out, will have to see how the sleeves look.

2 X ‘Over the Willamette‘ shawls, which I had to make after seeing Karin’s at Pointe Shoes Punk Rock and Purl. These only take a few hours, lots of fun! (Details on my rav project pages.)

A little birdie told me that a set of my favourite Knitpro crochet hooks was winging its way to me courtesy of the lovely M, and I couldn’t bear the thought of throwing them all in a pencil case with the others. So, knowing there were fifteen in the set (fifteen! Oh the joy! :)), I set about making a case for them. I am pleased with the end result.

(Incidentally, a lady at the Brisbane Craft Fair last year told me to put clear nail polish on the size so it doesn’t rub off, and it proved a good tip.)

A Year of William Morris update:
The peony tapestry cushion has been such a joy to stitch! I’m about two thirds done. I almost don’t want it to end.

And a William Morris cross stitch has been started…this is called ‘Peace be in this House’. I’m not a lover of cross stitch, but I couldn’t resist the design or the sentiment. 🙂

I’m also in the process of planning a William Morris quilt. Incapable of directly following a pattern as I am, this will certainly be a hybrid, and will include ravens.

Christmas Village Mark II:

So…..as promised, I gifted the original Christmas Village – with a little pang, I must admit – and set about planning the next one. I wanted it to be sturdier than paper this time, so I had the idea of using model train scenery.
I did some research and chose HO gauge and started looking for little houses. Well, if you know me at all, you can probably guess what happened next. The simple Christmas Village in my head has now exploded into a full blown model train layout, and my plans include over a dozen buildings, lake, mountains, Christmas market in the town square….you name it. Oh, and of course a train. I had no idea the model train thing was so frickin HUGE, particularly in the UK but also here. And now, I am becoming one of them. I shan’t be wearing a tracksuit nor growing a beard, but I have inadvertently stumbled upon a whole community of my own miniature-loving kind!
I’m doing it all arse-about, as for me the train is secondary to the landscape. So I started with buildings. I got my first kit on eBay for 99c. I didn’t know at the time, but this is a pretty complicated sort. There are over ninety metal extras plus the houses. The first one took a week of evenings to complete. I am using Tamiya model paints and Piko glue. I am particularly pleased with the curtains, stripe linen in the lounge and gingham in the kitchen. 🙂 (The pen is to show scale.) Weathering and the ‘Christmassy’ aspect will be added later, when I have more of the village completed.

I have picked up 8 buildings so far, and will slowly work my way through them.

In the meantime I am gathering supplies for the build and reading railway modelling magazines, sometimes into the wee hours, which M finds hilarious. (Yeah, go ahead and laugh it up, Chuckles. You’ll be wiring the whole thing up for me.) 🙂

  1. Man you are mad!! I just chortled my way through this post and wondered what the language was like as you made that uber tiny house! And you are going to fill a room with them huh? Oh well, never mind – there’s still 8 months til Christmas. I love those shawls! I’m a tad shawl crazy at the moment and the ones I am knitting/crocheting take 4 – 6 weeks each working with dedicated fury every evening…….. I don’t know how you find the time to fit in a job!! Marvelous, marvelous!! xo

    • Haha thanks Pauline! 😀 yes, it has been said…I’m more than a little bonkers when it comes to Christmas craft tee hee!! 🙂 I don’t know if it’ll be ready for this Christmas, it depends on a few factors, but hope so. :)) I recommend that shawl pattern if you’re in a hurry, but your last shawl was so beeeeutiful so I feel the time it takes is neither here nor there really….:) xox

  2. A new hobby – of course; just what you need. If you want to make your own miniatures I believe you can find free templates online for just about anything. Have fun.

Love your shawls and the setting they’re in.

    • Thank you Mary, yep yet another craft! At least for this one I can do all the things I already do, just in miniature! 🙂 I hope to do some template and scratch building later on when I get the hang of it properly. :))

    • Haha thanks Cath, well no, it doesn’t, I don’t feel at all myself if I can’t make something everyday, even if it’s just a creative mess! :)) hope your trip is still wonderful, seems like you’re making lots of new friends 🙂

  5. OMG! You have been busy! Love your Armorique shawls, so pretty and didn’t you love the pattern? So well written. The Christmas village is wonderful, I don’t know how you could part with the first one 🙂

    • Thanks very much Karin 🙂 yes it’s your fault though, seeing all your amazing shawls lately really put me in the mood as we come into our cooler weather…I bought at least three of the patterns you used, I’m a shawl stalker! 😀 now if I could just finish this damn endless Lilli Pilli!

      • LOL! Shawl stalker 🙂 I am just so impressed with this line, I find generally crochet patterns are not as well standardized as knitting patterns, so I’m stockpiling these. Lilli is so-o-o worth it in the end but… I’m working Duane Park – another with tons of garter – and I want to pitch it! Boring beyond belief! Must have discipline, ha ha 😀

  6. Such a crafty lady…so many beautiful things! Like Bruce, when I see all of this I’m inspired to make things. And recently Pauline posted something about the importance of blocking the knitting and crocheting….it looks like you are superb at that too….especially when it comes to something like the delicate intertwined patterns of those shawls…great work, and a most enjoyable post.

    • Thanks so much Cynthia, it makes me so happy to think I help inspire people to make things!! Yay!! 😀 yes I love blocking, it is essential with those lacy things especially, mine always look like an amateur crumpled mess otherwise! My favourite line when I’ve messed up the knitting is ‘oh, it’ll block out….’ 🙂

  7. All kinds of lovely stuff right here. I especially love the railway house. If I was ever to make a Christmas village (doubtful at best) I would use them as well as the end results are lovely. Loving those shawls and only taking a day? I am in! I hope your weather is cooling down a bit now. Ours is quite lovely at the moment. We are giving ourselves a few days off before we go back to TAFE so I am going to hook some slouchy hats (and maybe one of those shawls…) Paris? You lucky girl! Can’t wait to see that new Christmas village all wired up 😉

    • Thanks narfie, oh lovely, hope you enjoy your days off in the cooler weather, we’ve had 29 all week but next week is meant to be better 🙂 hope you have a go at the shawl, would love to see your version. And the hats too! Fingers crossed the Christmas village lives up to the epic scale one I now have in my head 🙂

      • If that little railway house is anything to go by, your Christmas village is going to be spectacular. They put a lot of thought and effort into those railway models. The railway guys are really into detail.

  8. My you just go on and on with different beautiful things. Starting with the goanna. Having one of those out the window might inspire something. Your multi-colored shawl is soooooo beautiful as is the William morris stitchery, quite, quite, intense. Then the new village and … I have to say I love trains and the little villages Can’t wait to see what you do. Amazing you!

    • Thank you so much Lisa, you made me smile! 😀 aren’t miniature things just the best! The pictures in some of the magazines are just incredible. I’m working out ways to incorporate all the crafts I know into it…even teeny tiny tapestry rugs maybe! 🙂

  9. Always so lovely to read your posts and see your amazing wildlife as well as what you’ve been up to. The crochet shawls are fab – I’m very tempted to try one of those. Tapestry is beautiful and how cute are those houses! 🙂

    • Thanks so much Bekki 🙂 I’m getting quite obsessed with the tiny houses to the point where I’m dreaming about them! :)) perhaps it is the opportunity to create my own miniature utopian society that appeals so much….I do hope you give the shawls a go, would love to see yours! 🙂

      • Oh yes, I know that feeling of dreaming about what you’re crafting and wondering, if maybe you’re getting a wee bit too obsessed, but I think it’s only a problem if you find yourself out in the woods hunting for miniature people to live in your houses 😉
